Death's Head Moth Makeup: 2026's Eeriest Nature Inspired Goth Trend

Meet Moth Eyes: 2026's softest, eeriest goth trend, inspired by the death's head hawkmoth's dusty wings and pale skull marking. A full vegan, cruelty free step by step tutorial inside.

There's a new creature crawling across goth TikTok and Instagram this week, and it isn't a spider. It's the death's head hawkmoth: dusty, ashen winged, marked with a pale skull pattern between its shoulders, and suddenly everywhere in unfiltered, texture forward makeup looks. Think powdery greys, sun bleached warmth, and a single delicate marking instead of a full face of drama. If you've been craving a goth look that feels more "moth landed on a candle" than "full vampire", this one's for you. 🦇

We're calling it Moth Eyes, and it's a proper palate cleanser after a summer of neon liner and glossy blood lips. It's soft, it's a little eerie, and it photographs beautifully with zero filter. Here's how to build it, step by step, using kit that's already vegan and cruelty free (as everything from Jolie Beauty always is).

Step 1: Give your skin a second skin, not a mask

Moth Eyes lives or dies on texture. Skip anything cakey and reach for our Second Skin Concealer to spot correct only where you need it. The formula sits so close to skin that your natural texture (freckles, a bit of grain, all of it) still reads through, which is exactly the "found in the wild" quality this trend wants.

Step 2: Carve dusty wing shadow

This is where the look earns its name. Using the cool, ashy tones from our Perfectly Sculpted Powder Contour Palette, sweep a greige shadow along your temples, under your cheekbones and very lightly down the sides of your nose, as though dust from a moth's wing had settled there. Blend it soft and directionless rather than sharp and sculpted. You want shading, not structure.

Step 3: Warm it with sun bleached blush

Real moth wings aren't just grey, they've got warmth worked through them. Pat our Second Skin Powder Blush in Dusty Rose high on the cheekbones and blend it back into the ash shading from step two. It should look like colour that's been there for years, not colour you just applied.

Step 4: Draw the marking

Here's the signature moment. Using the ultra fine tip of our Infinity Eyeliner Pen, draw a small, soft edged marking at the inner corner of one eye, extending faintly toward the brow bone, echoing the pale skull shape on a death's head moth. Keep the lines fine and slightly broken rather than crisp and graphic. Then rim the upper lash line as normal, letting it thin out toward the outer corner instead of flicking up.

Curl your lashes with our Eyelash Curler and leave them bare, or with just one light coat of mascara. Falsies feel too polished for this one; the appeal is in the imperfection.

Step 5: Dust the wings with light

Moth wings catch the light in strange, iridescent flickers when they move, and you can echo that with a whisper of our Moonchild Highlighter Palette swept along the cheekbone, brow bone and cupid's bow. Go sparingly here. This is a glint, not a glow.

Step 6: Finish with an ashen lip

Skip red entirely and reach for our Air Matte Liquid Lipstick in Ashes, a muted, dusty mauve that keeps the whole look cohesive rather than pulling focus. It's the exact shade a moth's wing would be if moths wore lipstick, which, honestly, feels like the entire point of this trend.

For blending all of the above without any harsh lines, our Ethereal PRO Face Makeup Brush Set is worth having in your kit. Soft, dense, and built for exactly this kind of tonal, no edges look.

Why we're into it

Goth beauty has spent 2026 getting louder (oxblood everywhere, graphic floating wings, spider lashes) so there's something genuinely refreshing about a trend that whispers instead of shouts. Moth Eyes rewards close up attention rather than photographing loud from across a room, and it works just as well for a Tuesday as it does for a night out. It's also refreshingly forgiving: a slightly wobbly marking or a smudge of ash just adds to the "found this in the woods" charm.

As always, every product above is vegan and cruelty free, because dark and dreamy should never cost anyone else their life. Try Moth Eyes this week and tag us, we'd love to see your version of the marking.
